Tomorrow's world - AI's impact on the workplace

Overview
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping industries and workplaces; its influence extends beyond technology and economics—it is fundamentally changing the landscape of UK employment law and how employers and employees interact. This session will explore how AI is challenging traditional employment frameworks, raising critical questions about employee rights, workplace ethics, and the future of work.
We'll dive into the following key topics:
- AI and Worker Classification: As automation and AI systems become more integrated into workplaces, there is an increasing blurring of lines between employees, contractors, and freelancers. We'll discuss how UK employment law must evolve to account for new types of work relationships that AI technology is fostering.
- Data Protection and Privacy: With AI systems collecting vast amounts of personal data, we'll examine the intersection of AI and the UK's GDPR regulations. How can organizations ensure that AI-driven practices comply with privacy laws, and how does this impact employee monitoring and surveillance?
- Discrimination and Bias in AI: AI systems, if not properly designed, can perpetuate biases—whether in hiring, promotions, redundancy exercises or performance evaluations. We'll explore the legal implications and risks, and specifically how UK laws address potential discrimination in AI decision-making.
- The Future of Employment Contracts: As AI takes over more routine tasks, employees will increasingly take on higher-level roles. What does this mean for employment contracts? We'll consider how traditional contracts might need to adapt to accommodate AI in relation to flexible work arrangements, remote work, and the gig economy.
- Health and Safety Concerns: AI and automation in the workplace raise concerns over mental health, job displacement, and retraining requirements. We'll analyse how the UK's legal framework can address these new workplace health and safety challenges.
- Practical Tips: What practical steps should employers be taking to address these issues and ensure they are able to capitalise the benefits of AI whilst avoiding the legal potential legal pitfalls.
By the end of this session, attendees will have a deeper understanding of the legal challenges and opportunities AI presents within the UK labour market, and how employers can navigate this new landscape to ensure fair, transparent, and compliant work environments.
This presentation is essential for legal professionals, HR leaders, policymakers, and anyone interested in the future of work in an AI-driven world.
